Hollins University

As Visiting Associate Professor and Chair of Illustration in the MFA in Children’s Literature low residency program, I wear two hats. As Chair, I oversee the Illustration side of the MFA and Certificate programs, assisting all of our students in their pursuit of visual narrative. My duties also include working with the Director to coordinate pedagogy and advisement policy, coordinate museum shows, choose and oversee guest artists, coordinate graduation program, oversee works study students, assist with new hires, advise illustration students, and monitor equipment needs. As a professor in the classroom, I assist the students in their final course, Portfolio, preparing them for the professional side of children’s books and the development of their own voice and style. Through one-on-one guidance, lectures, business workshops, creation of a resume, development of business cards and oversight of the portfolio, our students are prepared to pitch their projects to art directors and editors in the industry, with the intention of getting their work published.
